My client was the Joliet Junior College Math Department. They had requested a super graphic for one of their classrooms, something to liven the environment and make the setting a little calmer, with the caveat being the graphic needed to relate to math. With this, I decided to focus on the greek symbols often used for mathematical equations, such as Pi, Sigma, Theta, et cetera, as they are important to math, but also work outside of math in fields like physics. For the background behind these symbols, I used a photograph I had taken of one of the nature views at JJC, but specifically one located at the same building as the math department. This serves multiple purposes: One is to create an almost subliminal connection between math and nature to give the idea that math does not need to be stressful, that students can relax as they walk into class. Another is that the view is one students and staff can easily access and go to, as having its likeness close by can be livening. To tie the two elements together, I used various shapes of purple, the main color for JJC and a color that is balancing and motivating for people to look at. You may notice in my initial mockup the design is slightly different. Slight changes were made to the design, by the request of the client.
